i live in texas and have a 94 honda civic ex with 207379 miles. i use it as a daily driver and more than sometimes have fast accelerations. its almost time for an oil change and i wanted to know whats the best suitable oil for my car. not sure what brand is in the car right now, just that it’s 10w-30 and conventional. i want to switch to a full synthetic. should i stick with 10w-30 or go with 5w-30?
should a get a high mileage formula? What about castrol edge? or mobil 1 extended performance?

It seems like there are too many choices of what kind of oil I should get for my car. There’s regular, synthetic, semi-blend, high-mileage, 10,000 mile oil, etc. What I don’t get is when they say synthetic lasts longer between changes but doesn’t that mean it gets dirtier? I would thing that would be a bad thing. And does synthetic really lube the engine better? The cost is the reason why I don’t get the synthetic. I’ve always gotten just the regular and it’s worked fine.
96 buick century! Ran it yesterday started making a knock noise recently when started and would get quieter when engine would warm up! was gonna start running mobil1 high mileage 10w-30 motor oil in it and get the old oil changed out since that maybe was why it was knocking even though i just bought this car from a dealer last week and it was fine then and they had just recently changed the oil! it didn’t knock when i bought it but i did put some plain old gasoline in it because i was unaware that i should put good gas in this car and i ran a full can of some seafoam through the shitty gas with a full tank it started to knock when almost all of this gas was ran through i recently started putting the shell v power 91 octane gas through it as it is supposed to help clean out old gunk left by shitty fuels as you continue to use it and now today my car wont start as i had big plans to change the oil today i was just starting it to take it to a mechanic and now i cant even take it there please help!! when i was at autozone buying the oil yesterday the last time i drove the car i was gonna look under the hood and check the oil before i went home i popped it then got out of my car and it started to hail i got back in my car without opening the hood so it was just up a tad bit and i drove home the one mile to my house and then closed it once i got home . it had appeared to have got a little bit wet by the headlights and what not up front but nothing major and some water could have come through the giant buick grill in front so i think this was normal amount of water to be in there but now it wont start since this happened yesterday PLEASE HELP I DONT KNOW MUCH ABOUT CARS!!!
There was a slight amount of water on the inside of the grill from possibly hood being unlatched a bit or coming through the grill as it was raining really really hard when i was driving home with the hood unlatched cus it started to hail once i got out of my car to check the engine oil so i just hopped back in and drove home and shut the hood completely when i arrived back home! i didnt drive through any big puddles it just started raining! seems like it could be a connection problem! maybe spark plugs?? or alternator sounds plausible??
I have a 1999 Olds Intrigue that has 152,000 (approx) miles on it and it suddenly has a lifter noise. I changed the oil in it, (I use a high mileage synthetic due to driving conditions) but the noise is still there and I’m concerned that the car is about to go. I’ve talked to a mechanic and he thinks I may need to replace the lifters, but cost-wise, I might as well go ahead and just install a new motor. Does anyone know what may cause this? Do these things happen this suddenly? Also, can I use a Lucas oil additive to add extra lubrication to the lifters??
I drive a 2004 Pontiac Bonneville with about 99,000 miles. Still runs great, but I have heard people recommending a switch to using a High-Mileage motor oil. I was planning on using the Valvoline MaxLife 5w30, but don’t know if this is ok. Some say that switching from conventional oil to synthetic is not good for an engine; others say that nowadays engines are made to handle either. I heard Valvoline MaxLife is only 30% synthetic, so is it ok to make the switch to this type of oil for my 2004 Pontiac?
My Car is slightly Hesitating. I gave it a Motor Flush before an Oil Change, it is at 180,000 miles on my Oldsmobile Calais 2.5L "Iron Duke" Tech4. I wonder if my Plugs became "Fouled" by the Flush? There is Nrand New OiL Filter and Mobil 1 10W-30 High Mileage Full Synthetic in it.
What would you do if you were me? What should i check? And what would i need, and would you recommend, checking my Spark Plugs and "Checking" and "Cleaning" them, what kind of "Socket" and "how" (Ive never done, i wouldnt know what i saw unless told) – And are yo uinclined ot believe the "Hesitation" May have been caused by using thw Gunk Solder Seal Engine Flush (i let it idle for 5 minutes, then they drove it into the bay and the oil was changed?)
What would you do, what could it be? Thanks! (it is only a Slight Hesitation, but its a little rough upon takeoff from a stop, most notably when cold.) Thanks…
I love my Audi so much that its insane. So anyways I want to give it our first oil change today. I’ve never changed oil in a car ever before. I bought Mobile 1 fully synthetic 10w30 I believe. And filter and seafoam. Im excited! I live in the country bout 15 mins away from town. So I was wondering exactly what is THE BEST oil for my Audi A4? Also should I have bought the high mileage oil instead of just the normal?
Forget about mileage. Let’s focus on time.
Is there an oil out there that lasts a year?
I only drive 3000 miles per year.
My owner’s manual says every 5000 miles or six months, whichever comes first.
The car has 93,000 miles on it. I heard that synthetic oils are not good choices for cars with high mileage. How about synthetic blends?
All I want is an oil that is suitable for my car and will maintain its properties for a year given that it’s rarely driven.
I have a 1990 Honda Civic with 122k miles, and the car jerk when it is shifting. I am going to change the ATF to see if that will fix the problem, the color of the ATF of my car is light brown, kinda like the color of new motor oil. Should I use regular, synthetic or high mileage ATF? I’m trying to figure out which one is the best for my car, thanks.
It recommend to use Dexron, but there are synthetic, high mileage, and regular.
I purchased several bottles of Castrol 20W50 High Mileage Synthetic oil for my motorcycle, and then the next day I saw the section for just motorcycle oils, and was wondering if it really mattered. The manual says to use 20w50 oil w/ detergent, and this Castrol high Mileage stuff meets the criteria, but I guess technically it is a automobile lubricant. Do you think it would cause problems in my bike? It’s a 2000 Ural Tourist, 4 stroke, 2 cylinder 650cc and the same oil is used in both the main chassis and gear box.
I have a 2004 Honda Accord with 180,000 miles. It has no leaks what so ever and haven’t had any problems with it yet. I’m going to use the 5w20 that is recommended but I don’t know whether I should use the regular, synthetic, or high mileage oil.
Also any brands you guys recommend?
Thanks for the answers so far. May I add that I’ve been using synthetic since I bought it 2 oil changes ago and the guy I bought it from said he used the same.
I bought a 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse 2.4 L with 88,000 miles about a month ago from a private seller. Since then I have changed the oil and used Mobil 1 High Mileage 10W40 fully synthetic oil (I live in Texas so it gets really hot, thus the 10W40), put a new oil filter, changed spark plugs, spark plug seals, valve cover gasket, water pump belt, timing belt, got a new battery, got a new radiator, did a full coolant flush and put new coolant in.
This is all I have done so far. Do you think this should be good for now or is there anything else I should do for a car this mileage? I checked the Air filter and it looked okay, there wasnt a whole bunch of dirt in it, but I’ll probably change it within a year anyway. I also bought a new thermostat just in case.
So is this okay?
also My mechanic said I will need to change the wheel bearings in the back tires because the car makes a wobbling noise when driving at high speeds, but he said I could do it in a few weeks. How bad can it be to wait a few weeks to change wheel bearings? I cant afford to change them right now.
Thanks
I have a 2002 Honda accord 2.3L 4 cyl. The car guide says only use 5-20. I use synthetic and burn about 1-2 quarts within the 6 months or 6k till my next oil change. I have 122,000 miles. Should I move it to synthetic 5-30? Or a high mileage?
Thanks…
i drive an integra with 237k miles on it. i’ve been using a high mileage motor oil formula, but was thinking about switching to a full synthetic. is this a good idea?
