here is the info: i own a 06 chevy impala. i always used conventional oil and at 54,000 miles i decided to switch to fully synthetic. I work part time at the post office on a rural route and have to use this my own car so their is a lot of starting and stopping so i have been changing it every 4,000.
i was just about 200 miles away from the 4000 miles (66,000 total to date) and the low oil light came on so i checked the stick and it was not showing anything!! i dropped a quart in and drove and picked up some more fully synthetic and than changed it. their maybe was a quart and a half in their i emptied out and i know it hasnt been leaking. what is going on??

I have heard that i should use regular conventional oil instead of synthetic since the bike is brand new and only has 500kms on it, but the previous owner had left it sitting for a few months so the oil is obviously dirty and needs to be changed. Is it Ok if i use regular conventional car oil because the manual says to use SAE 10w 30 oil but does not specify if it should be motorcycle oil only. I have owned an 03 Yamaha R1 and that specified to use motorcycle oil only, but than again thats a high performance bike. Im not sure, please help because i dont want to pour crap oil in and mess up the bike

I have recently purchased a new vehicle. I was told that synthetic oil is a better value in the long run. I have typically paid about for conventional oil change. What is the price that I should be looking at if I decide on using the synthetic oil?

I own a 95 Mustang Cobra with a 5.0. For as long as I’ve own the car (over 4 years) I’ve use either Royal Purple or Mobil 1 synthetic oil. Im in the process of putting in a new cam, lifters, push rods, heads and upper/lower intake manafold. I’ve noticed that its recommended to use conventional oil to break in new components but I’ve also been told that once you start using synthetics you cant go back. What oil should i use to break in the engine?

I used to use 10W30 conventional. We bought the car at 85-88.000 miles, no idea what oil was in it before.
The problem is… when I was in the store, I was looking at the catalog and it suggested "FL-400S" oil filter and "5W-20" motor oil for 98 Ford Escort SE (2.0 SOHC). So, I bought them and well, it costed me around (oil is synthetic blend)
But, changing from conventional 10W-30 to 5W-20 Synthetic blend is acceptable? As far as I know, engine has no problems. (starter and alternator have problems, but they will be changed very soon, too.)
Old oil filter : Fram 3600
Old conventional oil : ST 10W-30
New oil filter: Motorcraft FL-400S
New synthetic blend oil : Motorcraft 5W-20
I am asking opinions, because when I called The Ford company, they told me that I should use oil filter FL-400A and 5W-30 synthetic oil… But when I look at their catalog, they are wrong. I live in Indiana state. Thanks for your help.

I’ve been using synthetic oil in an ’07 Tacoma for 3,000 miles. I know that it does not break down as quickly as conventional oil and does not need to be changed as frequently. My plan is to change the oil filter every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. How often should you change the actual synthetic oil? I have heard anywhere from 10,000 to 25,000.

I have a 2003 Saturn Ion (2.2L I4) that just rolled over to 80,000 miles. I live in Minnesota, so it’s subject to both extreme hot and extreme cold conditions. I’ve been running almost exclusively Mobil 1 fully-synthetic oil in it since about 20,000 miles. I’ve had great results with the Mobil 1, and I’ve felt it’s been worth the extra money I’ve spent. Being that my car is getting up there in age, I’ve debated switching to one of the high-mileage oils to possibly head-off any leakage or seal problems that might creep up. Which out of these options would you suggest, and why?
1.) Just stick with Mobil 1
2.) Switch to a conventional high-mileage oil
3.) Switch to a fully-synthetic high-mileage oil
4.) Switch to plain-old conventional oil (keep in mind the
temperature extremes)
5.) Another option not listed here….
Thanks for any insight you can give! For some reason this choice is one I’m having trouble making.

I bought a Honda Civic recently, and the previous owner used synthetic oil for the past 9 months. I’ve heard, at least with the hold synthetics, that they can cause the oil seals to swell, and then leak terribly if you go back to conventional oil.
Is that true with today’s synthetics? Or am I totally safe to change back to conventional oil?
I think the oil he used was Quaker State Ultimate Durability™ Q Horsepower.

I have well maintained Toyota carina ED car. It is 1998cc. Auto transmission ECT-S. 16 valve EFI 4S engine. Made 1990.
I need to know that Synthetic Blend Motor Oil best fits for my that old car? Or other conventional oil is better?
Waitting for your kind help
I mainly drive the car with CNG gas. So should i use Engine oils Lebeled Duel Fuel or CNG? But none of there API is SL. Mostly they are SF or SG.

My new Nissan Sunny from 1992 has been using mineral oil. I recently purchased this old and well-kept Nissan and when the oil was changed, the new was fully synthetic. I know that it is generally not advised to do this, but when I went to buy the oil the dealer recommended the fully synthetic oil. He said he knew Nissan cars and said this would be good. I thought to myself, “Who am I to disagree?”.
Please note that I am aware that fully synthetic oil works better than mineral oil in cold temperatures. Where I live it gets regurlaly -15 Fahrenheit/-25 Celsius during the winters. This fact made me also to try the fully synthetic oil.
To the point, my questions are:
1. Did I do a terrible mistake by switching to fully synthetic oil? What risks may lie ahead?
2. In case I regret using fully synthetic oil, can I switch back to mineral oil? Or is to too late?
3. Please don’t tell me I have damaged my engine?

Thanks for the feedback!! I really appreciate it! Now I have to ask one more thing because in one of the answers it was said that do not mix mineral and synthetic oil (Actually it was mentioned conventional oil but I assume conventional oil is mineral oil!). Now, I had purchased the car and after driving with it for a few days I noticed the low oil level. I bought semi-synthetic oil and added it in the engine. I drove with it for about 6 weeks or about 1250 miles/2000 km before I changed the oil. Could this have done some small damage? I doubt so, but I wish to ask because here seems to be people who knows about these things. Once again, thanks for the responds!

I’m a motor/engine retard, so I assumed it would be fine. Some people are now telling me it was a stupid idea. Is this going to kill my lawn mower? And can I go back to using conventional oil now that I’ve run the lawn mower with the synthetic? I’ve been told you can’t go back…
Thank you!
Thanks to you both. I added it because it was all we had in the house and I was mid-mow. Didn’t want to run to the store. Thanks again!!!

I use Mobil Clean 5000 right now. The UOA’s(Used Oil Analysis) on bobistheoilguy.com are not sufficient enough to give me good data. I really doubt Mobil would make a bad oil. The car runs wonderfully with it, and I drive 70% highway miles so there’s no "severe" driving for me to worry about with shorter OCI’s(Oil Change Intervals). I particularly like the 5000 mile guarantee. I use purolator oil filters only. My car is a 1991 Toyota Camry, so I don’t use synthetic. Older engines like this one don’t seem to be designed for synthetic oil from what I hear. (The car engine needs an overhaul because it does some slight oil burning, which is my other question here that has already been resolved) I was just wondering if for example someone drives the same car as I do, and has a lot of miles like I do (228,700). I just want to keep this car running as much as I can until I need to overhaul the engine. So what’s your favorite conventional oil?
dodge man: I tried synthetic once, but my oil burning increased a good deal. I guess I could try a heavier level synthetic, I haven’t tried that before. I know for a fact that synthetic oil is much better and maybe I will give it another try. I can’t help but notice your extreme amount of best answers and the fact that you are a certified mechanic. Have you ever worked with this engine before? I was only wondering. But considering your advice I will probably try synthetic again. I used 10W-30 synthetic but the oil pressure was low, I believe due to increased clearances from engine wear. I guess I should try a 10W-40 synthetic.
The guy who had my car before me really didn’t take care of it, I really did all the maintenance work I’m capable of to keep the car running well. (Transmission fluid/filter change, added a Tranny cooler, religious oil changes, new struts, tires, brakes, cv axles, timing belt, spark plugs…)
I know conventional oil has increased in quality by leaps and bounds the past 20 years. That’s great for all of us. It seems like it doesn’t matter as much what oil you use. I just like the Mobil Clean 5000′s guarantee that I can change oil every 5000 miles.

well…right now im using semi-synthetic oil which is mobil super 2000 0w40….but alot people give good review on Mobil 1 oil where it protects the engine better than conventional oils…despite my driving style would be highspeed and once in a while rev the car…so is it better for me to take Mobil 1 or stick to semi-synthetic which is more than enough??…and some say conventional oil is more than enough provided changing the oil on time/earlier….well??
